DENIM STAR BUTTONS
download

Are you folks getting 'buttoned out' yet? LOL! I just can't stop making them. I lay in bed at night and dream up new button ideas. I keep thinking about my Gramma's big old button jar. She had what I think was an old Glass Kraft Crunchy Peanut Butter jar, filled to the brim with every imaginable sort of button. Big ones, little ones, metal ones, plastic ones, ones with four holes, ones with three. All colors and shapes and sizes. She used to help with the big rummage sales at the local church, and she and her sister, my dear, dear Aunt Margaret would cut all the buttons off of the clothes which were not suitable for sale, salvaging what they could. They would remove the buttons, zippers and anything out of the ordinary. Nothing was wasted.

Aunt Margaret and her husband Uncle Jim, were rock hounds and they tumbled rocks to make them all shiny and smooth, which they made into jewellery. Nothing you would find in a famous Jewellery store, but nice none-the-less. I mention this because for a time, they got creative with peach pits (we live in orchard country) They made little 'peach pit pets' – tiny critters with those rolly little eyes stuck to them. They also shined up the outsides and drilled two holes in the middle and turned them into buttons (one half pit for a button) My Gramm and Aunt Margaret were both talented knitters and they stitched away on several intricately cabled sweaters (with raglan sleeves no less!) on which they affixed the peach pit buttons. They were truly ingenious!

Hmmmm.... NO BARBARA ... no peach pit buttons for my bloggers... (there is a limit, right?)

Oh, by the way – have you backed up your files lately? Just a friendly little reminder from someone who's lost countless photos and files a few too many times. I will pop this reminder in now and again – perhaps I will be the one to save you a ton of grief!

My pictures today are of ducks being fed beneath a bridge here on Osoyoos Lake. There were many ducks and just a few geese competing for bread being tossed t them by an elderly couple. The geese were just not fast enough to get in on the action and spent most of it's time pecking at a duck or two here and there!

I was watching a show on the history channel at the gym yesterday (yeah, it does not make you work out terribly energetically – some fast music tends to help your heart rate a bit better than that) It was a show on garbage. Really. And it was interesting. This was a show about a garbage in a large urban area. I'm not sure which city it was. How they deal with all that garbage is amazing. But the one thing that impressed me and stuck in my mind, is that a particular garbage landfill site (dump) they actually have a full time Falconer on site. This is a person who has a trained falcon with them. The falcon keeps the seagulls away. The seagulls tend to take the garbage and spread it off into other areas, polluting out of the dump. They also create havoc with airplanes, because many dumps seem to be located near airports. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Things To Do In An Elevator...

When people get on, ask for their tickets.

When there's only one other person in the elevator, tap them on the shoulder and then pretend it wasn't you.

Push the buttons and pretend they give you a shock. Smile, and go back for more.

Ask if you can push the button for other people, but push the wrong ones.

Hold the doors open and say you're waiting for your friend. After a while, let the doors close and say, "Hi Mike. How's your day been?"

When the doors close, menacingly announce that "It's going to be a bumpy ride."

Constantly bounce a tennis ball.

Drop a pen and wait until someone reaches to help pick it up, say "that's mine!"

Stand in the corner reading a telephone book, laughing.

Take pictures of everyone in the elevator.

Turn off the lights in the elevator to "conserve energy."

Leave a box in the corner, and when someone gets on ask them if they hear something ticking.

When the doors close, announce to the others, "It's okay. Don't panic, they open up again."

Push your floor button with your nose.

Stand alone, and when the doors open tell people trying to get on that the car is full and that they should wait for the next one.

Swat at flies that don't exist.

Push the top floor button and announce that you tried to kill yourself yesterday but the other building wasn't high enough.

Talk to people about the "golden age of elevators in the 50's."

Jump rope.

Stand really close to someone, sniffing them occasionally.

Ask, "Did you feel that? I felt a rumble."

  14. Thank you so much! I haven't been on in a while and I've missed reading your blog! I loved the buttons and the story about your Aunt and Grandma. I'm sure they were raised to be so frugal. I love coming across stories and tips nowadays of people who still are very good at conserving. Thanks again for the buttons, they remind me of MY mom and grandma's button jars and tins.- Sandy

  20. I was always fascinated by the button jar as a child as well. Certainly dont have one of those around here. Of course, nowadays, each new shirt or jacket usually supplies you with one extra button, sewn to the tag or something.
I do have a lot of cute ones for scrapbooking...if only I took the time to do some!

Have a great week my friend!
